I began reading Middlemarch a few months ago, a novel written by the amazing British novelist George Elliot (for you non-literary types, George Eliot is a pen name for Mary Ann Evans who had to hide her gender). I was excited because I had read Mill on the Floss and had loved it.

I had started reading it a while ago, but had stopped due to work at school. However, I was taking a long train ride to Liana’s place, so I popped out the book and began reading.

Oddly, none of the characters mentioned on the back cover of the book appeared in the story. Instead of taking place in England, the story was taking place in Russia. Hmm, perhaps this is the back story of my characters! Then characters with the names of Oblonsky and Levin and other weird people emerged. What the… wow, didn’t know George Eliot was fascinated with Russians! Then I got to page 34. The book suddenly transitioned into a new font.

So the book apparently was misprinted with the first 30 pages being from Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina. Luckily, Liana had a copy of it, so going to read Anna Karenina first before I get a new copy of Middlemarch. Sigh…

I’m sorry, I don’t understand all the anger about Khan being played by a white man. The original Khan, who in the show is supposed to be of Northern Indian descent, is played by a man born of Mexican Heritage.

Who cares who plays Khan, as long as he’s not a white man.

And yet nobody seems to point that inconsistency out. Imagine, if Khan in this film was played by a man of Asian Indian descent, then the film commentary would be as follows: “In a lack of cultural sensitivity, J. J. Abrahms has chosen to reawaken the irrational fear of “Asian Invasion” with the use of a minority villain, instilling the archaic notion of the threat of the East.”

I think people’s outrage would be more understandable had Khan been a figure that had been treated with more cultural reverence from the start of his inception. Haters gonna hate, I’m watching this movie.

The students had a chart that had modern words and their Elizabethan counterparts. They had to write a dialogue using the Old English words. The only thing K had on her entire paper was, “Hither dispatch Sirrahs,” which translated to “Go kill boys.”

Why does this have to be taken negatively? He could have meant that he likes to see his sisters strong and confident instead of passive and subservient, like how the rest of the world likes its women?

it’s problematic because feminism ought to be about giving women freedom and the choice to decide for themselves what/how to be/act. his implied projection that women must either be weak or strong / meek or confident is problematic because it reinforces the gender role binary that patriarchy has created… and it seems to imply that in the fight for equality, women want to be like men. we don’t. we want the choice to be what we want to be, whether that is meek or confident or anywhere in between or off that spectrum. the first step to that is men no longer projecting their idealized version of a woman onto us. if this man’s particular preference is for confident women, that is fine, but it has nothing to do with feminism.

Would this be different if a woman had been holding that sign? I have definitely heard of feminism in the context of confidence, voice, and presence. And in all honesty, what movement doesn’t push for more confident people?
